one woman's cure for the empty-nester blues
What amazes me every single nesting is how incredibly-fast hatchlings mature into fledglings. The four Carolina Chickadee nestlings in this photo were just 90 minutes from fledging. In the background is one unhatched egg. Just 17 days earlier these four nestlings were encased in a same-size eggshell. Creation, at the smallest level of detail, is awe-inspiring!
I was giving some guests a tour of their bedroom. When I took them out on the small terrace adjoining the room … the conversation went like this:
Guest: “Ummmm, why is there a video camera right outside our bedroom door on this terrace?”
Me: “Oh, that. Not to worry. I’ve been seeing some poop up here and I’m trying to find out what is leaving it. It’s rather strange with this terrace being three floors above ground.”
Guest: “That is interesting … but … we think we prefer the ambiance of the smaller bedroom on the other side of the hall. It’s cozier.”
Me: “I’ve got some great news to report. If you are tired of “cozy”, you can move back into the larger bedroom now. I finally caught the poop-culprit on video and it’s nothing to worry about. Look.”

Bats are mammals — and the only mammal that can fly. I believe this guy was just hanging out to digest his dinner. He’d hang out for about an hour — and then was off.
